Improving Health Through Better Research With Primary Care

About Us

PCRNI

Research in Primary Care has taken place in Northern Ireland successfully for decades. Patients and staff from across Northern Ireland, including dozens of GP practices, have helped in the discovery of successful treatments and guidance for many healthcare conditions, improving the lives of others.

Our organisation has recently moved to sit within the GP Federations, placing us at the heart of working General Practice in Northern Ireland, allowing us to facilitate Primary Care research as seamlessly and efficiently as possible.

Our experienced team are aware of the challenges facing those in Primary Care, and have the skills and resources available to help busy General Practice staff fulfil their research potential, with benefits for their patients and beyond.

Primary Care Research Northern Ireland was set up as part of the UK CRDC Network. This was established in April 2025 to improve the speed and efficiency of commercial clinical research delivery across Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. The network aims to create a more innovative and coordinated research delivery system that strengthens the global competitiveness of the UK clinical trials delivery, while contributing to the health and prosperity of the nation.

Northern Ireland has received £12.6 million investment through the Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing and Access (VPAG) five-year investment programme. This agreement between the ABPI, the Department of Health and Social Care, and the National Health Service will support the continued development of commercial research capability. It will also expand opportunities for the Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSC) and the population of Northern Ireland to deliver and participate in important commercial clinical trials.

Within Northern Ireland these funds are administered by the HSC R & D Division  as part of the Commercial Research Delivery Centre Northern Ireland, with £4 million awarded to establish Primary Care Research Northern Ireland under project SPI-5844-25.
